AlanAlan Turner
Born in 1939 in the miming village of Easington, Co Durham he was determined to e a painter from childhood and his early paintings were concerned with the landscape surrounding those harsh collieries. He marries Catha Johnson in 1960 and they moved to Hartlepool where he set up his first studio. His work throughout this period was experimental and his influences ranged from Corot to Rothko !
During the ten years spent in Hartlepool in collaboration with the poet Alex Hand he was instrumental in establishing the arts magazine ‘Iconolatre’ which published poetry, essays and original art work. He was also with a small circle of young painters, starting exhibiting under the heading of The Front Group. In this period her organised and took part in many poetry and jazz readings in Northern England.
A move to Jedburgh in The Scottish Borders in 1970 with their daughter Denise saw his work return to a straight look landscape particularly winter landscapes.
In 1974 Cath and Alan established the Canongate gallery and soon became his main outlet for his work. They closed the gallery in the late 80’s and showed widely in solo and groups exhibitions. Buy Design Gallery at Harestanes became his local selling outlet from 1996.
In keeping with the other Northern Hemisphere landscape artists Alan developed a rich expressive way of painting flowers and natural growth. Great canvases of colour, form and movement.He was painting, making surreal video, fishing, cycling and motorbiking until his death in 2020 after a period of poor health.
A great raconteur and enthusiast for younger talent and artistic skill he was a great motivator and advocate for anything being possible. He was a snappy dresser in his drainpipe suits and rats-tail ties and skinny rib scarfs. His work is in many private and public collections throughout the UK and abroad.
This collection of mounted prints has become available through his widow’s estate and the discovery of many unmounted paintings and drawings in his studio near Jedburgh.
